BIRCHGROVE TERRACE CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY

We have recently started the construction of alterations and additions to an original sandstone workers cottage in Birchgrove. The works include a complex steel structural frame to support the existing sandstone walls and new extensions, all within a very tight spatial envelope. The project balances the retention of original features and materials with the insertion of new elements.

the bar at the end of the wharf

We have just visited the newly finished Bar at the end of the Wharf - the new venue for the Sydney Theatre Company. The bar was designed by STC Resident Designer Alice Babidge and we were the documentation architects. To check out what's on at the Bar and the latest news for the Sydney Theatre Company click here.

VAUCLUSE HOUSE PROGRESS

The Vaucluse house project is nearing lock-up stage. The design features various framed views of the Tasman Sea and Dover Heights from all the principal living spaces. We look forward to seeing the exterior finished over the next few weeks and will post an update on the progress later in the year.

CRONULLA HOUSE RENOVATIONS COMPLETE

We have recently completed a major internal refurbishment of a post-war period house in Cronulla featuring some complex folded-plane skylights carved into the existing roof space. We will update the RESIDENTIAL section with some more photos from the project shortly. 

URBAN ISLANDS ARTICLE IN AR

The 2011 edition of the Urban Islands studio has been the subject of an article in the current issue of Architectural Review Australia. Mark Szczerbicki was one of the organisers of the studio, along with the original founders Tom Rivard (Lean Productions) and Olivia Hyde (BVN).

merry christmas and a happy 2012!

STUDIO [R] wishes our friends, colleagues and collaborators a Merry Christmas and a safe holiday period.

Our office will be closed from Friday 23^rd December and will re-open Monday 9^th January. See you in 2012!

zinc roof complete at bellevue hill

The 'folded plane' zinc roof at the Bellevue Hill residence has just been finished. We celebrated this milestone with the builder, Horizon Habitats, by having a rooftop BBQ.

We are looking forward to the completion of this project in early 2012 when will add it to our RESIDENTIAL section.

modern house website launched

One of our collaborators, MODERN HOUSE, has just launched a new website with the first listings of architect-designed properties for sale and rent. We are looking forward to being involved in managing the PROJECT MODERN FUND, aimed at promoting the work of young and emerging architects. 

killara house in new interiors book

Another update on the Killara House 1 project on which we worked with Arnold Lane - the house will appear in a new book to be released by Thames&Hudson in November.
